Chan Chan 2.0?

Like time and place, music has since evolved to fuse new sounds, new blends, new genres. There's an appreciation of new music on the island, which I've been more curious to engage in. But all day I’ve been thinking about this image and its unintended similarities to The Buena Vista Social Club’s 1997 album cover [2nd image], how the 1984 unforgettable melody of “Chan Chan" transcended the Caribbean and the rest of the globe, how I'd used to hear it in the background when I was younger with no recognition of it's origins, and how the song has now become somewhat an anthem for tourists who touch down on the island. The immediate link between the song and the island, and the personal nostalgia it brings is what makes it a classic in its own right, and a song that whenever I hear it, paints the tourist's view of Cuba that we've all come to associate it with. Whether that's a good thing or not is up for debate.
